EIFFAGE ENERGÍA against the effects of climate change

Climate change is a reality of which Eiffage Energía is extremely aware, so much so that we include a series of environmental indicators which ensure that those environmental aspects considered significant are controlled within acceptance criteria defined by Eiffage Energía. These serve as a basis for reducing the environmental impacts generated by the company’s activity.

A large number of countries have joined this initiative to tackle climate change, such as the Paris Agreement held at a summit in December 2015. Through this, it was agreed to fight against climate change by means of two fundamental conditions for its entry into force:

– It had to be ratified by at least 55 countries.
– Greenhouse gas emissions emitted by these 55 countries should add up to at least 55% of total world emissions.

On 5 October 2016, the standards of these two conditions, imposed at said Summit for its entry into force, were exceeded ten months after they were established, which bears testimony to the concern shown by all the governments of the world to combat climate change.

At the moment, in the German city of Bonn, a world summit is taking place, in which delegations from nearly 200 countries are taking part, and whose intention is the further progress in the implementation of the Paris Agreement. In this, as is known from well-informed sources, the exit of the US from this agreement is feared and European diplomacy will be trying to avoid such an exit. It is the second largest emitter of CO2 in the world, after China, which places it as one of the major players in this agreement. President Donald Trump has been threatening the imminent departure of the US from the Paris Agreement since his election campaign. Now, this moment may have arrived.

In this way, on observing the environmental scenario that surrounds us, Eiffage Energía understands that its role is to be fully active in the fight against climate change, that is why we are facing one of our greatest challenges: to reduce the environmental impact of the activities that we carry out. For this reason, the commitment of the steering committee, together with the quality management is to promote and integrate environmental management in all of Eiffage Energía’s processes, for which it has implanted an Environmental Management System according to the ISO 14001 standard.

Therefore, it is necessary to use processes that minimise the massive consumption of raw materials and fossil fuels, such as the development of new technologies that reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
